Codex Entry: Emperor Thorgrim the Uneasy

You have the army of mediocrities followed by the multitude of fools. As the mediocrities and the fools always form the immense majority, it is impossible for them to elect an intelligent government.

Guy de Maupassant

Emperor Thorgrim

Thorgrim of the House of Agryn was King of the Temerians before being crowned and recognised Holy Temerian Emperor by the Holy See in 1443. He ruled the decade preceding the Great Interregnum, and was the last Emperor of the Great Imperial Peace, ignited two Emperors before him with Qaralys the Great.

A mediocre emperor mocked by his subjects, Thorgrim fell into paranoia and descended into tyranny, being dubbed Thorgrim the Uneasy, and Thorgrim the Unfortunate. His many failed campaigns and stalemates with rival nations helped disgracing his reputation, his popularity with the smallfolk and the imperialists decreasing every year. He was supported by the Four Lords of the Imperial Order – a notorious group of kingmakers.

He attended the University in his youth, where his grades were average. He was described by Archmage Elodin as a talented student, but uninterested in arcane and knowledge. He was a fellow student of Richard Frates, who held him responsible for his dismissal of the prestigious academy.

Ironically, he was killed in single combat by Frates during the slaying of kings in 1455, which contributed to his reputation of a misunderstood and idealist ruler, who died a martyr to save his country.

Swiftly forgotten, his death led to an open rebellion between the Four Lords of the Imperial Order, a dark age named the Great Interregnum.
