Its cover character in the standard edition is Dantena van Torquaz, a “Postmodern Fantasy Evil Overlord”, build with depth and interacting in a massive universe, one of the more realistic and compelling I’ve made. The only Tolkienesque influence is The Children of Hurin, and I credit Maurice Druon for my main plotline of accursed kings, equivalent to that of an Elder Scrolls main quest.
If The Prince of Cinder follows three interweaving plotlines; 1) Disaster falls upon the House of Fulgam, reigning dynasty of the Fire Age since King Manfred had betrayed the great sorcerer Malazarios; 2) The millennium-older crossing of Dræl by Ismair valenKel (through Dantena van Torquaz’s visions within the Age of Fire’s last crusade – a flash-back itself); 3) The exploring of the Caves of Time by the former, Temeros-prime inquisitor who hence witnesses an inescapable future: “a grim steampunk universe ruled by the semi-omniscient Aspect-Emperor”, where the Burns brothers seek a bandit’s treasure in the Unclaimed Territories while the Malezarian Imperium attempts to summit the Oriental Empires;
The Bargain of Bones is primarily focused on Dantena van Torquaz, an ambiguous inquisitor and postmodern fantasy villain (a lawful evil overlord, to use the D&D alignment system), who is denied command over the Corrupt Church of Eternal Fire’s Army of Armoured Warrior Monks with a fanatical devotion to the theo-magus. Maithaniel, the new theo-magus, was elected thanks to Dantena, who hope he would be appointed as Lord General, thus leading the Northern Kingdoms through a Great Crusade to reconquer his kingdom. Instead, he is left as inquisitor, and his dreams of Atonement are cast aside. Even if widely disgraced following the failure of his Hero’s Journey a Decade Ago, the Broken Ace Dantena van Torquaz, in desperate need of his estranged Big and Screwed up Family, privately forswearing any loyalty to the Church or any State.
Aide by a host of allies, including his intriguing apprentice Florian, his manoeuvering sister Sixtina; Concubine and Intrepid Jynn Isaltes, and a host of unwitting pawns, Dantena begins a chess game of immense political importance. Taking revenge on those who wronged him, Torquaz also positions himself to grab more power than he had ever previously planned.
